Medical History giving and taking is an art. Irrespective of age group, you will be asked to elaborate on your medical concerns / symptoms. It is always a good habit to write your symptoms before arriving. List down your problems. We may also ask on your past history or family history of gynecology disease, history of chronic disease such as diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy, thyroid disease, blood pressure issues, rheumatic disease, age of menopause across family members, early menopause, history of cancer, fibroids, previous surgery etc.
Pelvic examination is an integral part of gynecology check up, which is done in a methodical step. First External genitalia will be examined, to look for any anatomic abnormality, genital warts, discharge, cysts or any signs of irritation.
Next, a speculum may be inserted to separate the walls of vagina, so that cervix and vagina walls can be thoroughly examined.
To assess for internal organs and understand more details on uterus, tubes (fallopian tubes) and ovaries, gloved fingers may be inserted into the vagina while simultaneously pressing on your abdomen. In some, an ultrasound probe may be inserted through vagina to better visualize the anatomy of uterus, tubes or ovaries or any abnormality.
