What is Laparoscopy Gynecology Surgery ?

Laparoscopy gynaecology surgery is a kind of minimal invasive surgery in the field of gynecology. It is a surgical technique in which minimum inciscion is given. The abdominal cavity is filled with gas (carbondioxide) so as to elevate the abdominal wall which helps in better visualization of internal pelvic organs such as uterus, urinary bladder, ovary, fallopian tubes. A laparoscope is a small instrument (around one centimetre in diameter) that is inserted via a small incision. It carries a small sophisticated camera which provides an adequate view of the internal organs. Via another instrument that carries surgical instruments the actual surgery is then done.

What is the difference between laparoscopy and laparotomy or open surgery ?

In open surgery, the abdomen is opened with a longer incision, and the internal organs are visualized directly. In laparoscopy, a small instrument (around one centimeter in thickness) is inserted into the abdomen, via a very tiny small incision and surgery done with minimal inciscion. So the advantages for laparoscopy surgery may be any of the following:

  • less pain
  • less post operative wound infection
  • less scar formation

In operative laparoscopy, apart from the laparoscope that is inserted there are other instruments that are inserted that can carry things like scissors, scalpels and sutures (stitches)
