IUCD insertion

Intra Uterine Device, IUD, or also called as Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device, IUCD, is a “T shaped” device that many patients have it inserted into their uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is one of the contraceptive method that we use for our patients at Delhi, who chose it as an option for preventing pregnancy.

What kinds of IUD are available at Delhi ?

We use one of the following IUCDs at Delhi:
Normal Copper T , Multiload: Copper wire is wound around the T shaped IUCD. There are different varieties and can stay inside for 3 years, 5 years and 10 years depending on what patients choose.
Hormone releasing IUD (Mirena, Emily): This can stay and be effective for 5 years. Cost is more than the conventional Multiload , copper T.

How does IUCD work ?

Different IUD have different mechanisms. In general the device prevents fertlization by killing sperms, by not allowing sperm to join the eggs. The hormonal IUDs, additionally affect thickness of cervical mucus, and may keep the lining of uterus from growing thick thus preventing adequate implantation.

How safe is IUD ?

In our experience of using IUD for patients who have chosen it as an option of contraception, we believe it is generally safe. However one must remember that as like any other medicines, they all carry every element of benefits and risks. Talk with your local physician gynecologist about understanding on any risks of putting IUD inside you. Some of the clinical conditions where one should avoid using IUDs are if you have pelvic infection, sexually transmitted disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, cervical cancer, brest cancer or clinically significant liver diseases etc.

How is IUD inserted ?

Dr. Sahu conducts IUD insertion as an OPD procedure at Delhi which generally takes around 5-10 minutes, and does not require any anesthesia. Patients are asked to visit mmediately after menses to have IUD insertion.
