Hormone releasing IUD (Mirena, Emily): This can stay and be effective for 5 years. Cost is more than the conventional Multiload , copper T.

Different IUD have different mechanisms. In general the device prevents fertlization by killing sperms, by not allowing sperm to join the eggs. The hormonal IUDs, additionally affect thickness of cervical mucus, and may keep the lining of uterus from growing thick thus preventing adequate implantation.
How safe is IUD ?
In our experience of using IUD for patients who have chosen it as an option of contraception, we believe it is generally safe. However one must remember that as like any other medicines, they all carry every element of benefits and risks. Talk with your local physician gynecologist about understanding on any risks of putting IUD inside you. Some of the clinical conditions where one should avoid using IUDs are if you have pelvic infection, sexually transmitted disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, cervical cancer, brest cancer or clinically significant liver diseases etc.
